THE PLANETS AS SIGNIFICATORS
A significator is a planet representing the person or thing of horary importance. The ascendant represents the querent, and the ruler of the sign on the cusp of the 1st is his significator. The ruler of the sign on the house of the quesited is its significator, as well as planets in the house. The querent’s significator may not be usable, as in cases where it rules the signs for both the querent and the quesited or is retrograde. In that case, allow the w to corule the sign and call the w the coruler of the question. The planet having natural rulership of the quesited is taken into consideration and is called the co-significator. It does not have to be in the sign ruling the quesited. The house holding the querent’s significator or coruler w reveals where his interest really lies. Where you find the significator of the quesited you discover the whereabouts of the quesited. Where you find the co-significator of the quesited you find confirmation regarding its whereabouts.
If the significator is in Water signs, representing creatures that lack a voice, it is mute testimony of great reticence and you are dealing with a very reserved person. Do not expect him to confide openly, or the quesited to yield really complete information. If any aspect to W is included, a plan is afoot, if to Y, a scheme is afoot, and if to both, a plot is afoot. A significator in bad aspect to the ruler of the house it is in is disadvantaged. This tells you that the person is unhappy about the situation in which he finds himself. He is at odds with someone represented by the house he occupies. If the significator is in the 12th house and in bad aspect to a Malefic, or in L, then he is disappointed. In any house and in the sign following the one on the cusp of the house, it puts him in the disappointment 12th house relationship with the affairs of the next house. This is known as the dark side of the house, because the light can’t get past the doorway or cusp of the house and it is like half an interception. If the significator or coruler w is conjunct the 6th cusp of sickness and distress, the querent will be dissatisfied with the answer, and a Malefic there upsets him. If the significator is combust the Q, the person does not control his own affairs because he is on very shaky ground and severely disadvantaged. If the significator is fixed and cadent, that person will not take any unaided action and will not act in his own interest. He is insecure. If it is in its detriment or fall and under hard aspect, he is in deep despair about the quesited and is in some danger. He is insolvent, and unable to extricate himself unless saved by another by being in mutual reception. If the querent’s significator is in the house of the quesited, he will work hard to acquire what that house promises him. When the other person’s significator is in the 1st house he has come to the querent’s aid. When the same planet rules both querent and quesited, take the w as ruler of the querent. The quesited is thus at a disadvantage, and insecure. However, if the w is Void of Course, the querent will not press his advantage, nothing will come of the matter. The querent or quesited whose ruler is weak by sign or making hard aspects to the Malefics is unfortunate in that situation, he is insecure and unprepared to handle challenges now.

THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE w
The w is the planet nearest the Earth, and so is the fastest moving planet in our sky. The w rules the Water sign D and is exalted in B and in the 3rd house. It is in its detriment in v and in its fall in H, and it rules over the Earth Element by night. The w is feminine, nocturnal, cold and moist.
Manners: When well dignified it indicates someone with cultured manners, a sympathetic and sensitive person. He is a lover of ingenious and wonderful knowledge, a searcher for and delighter in novelties. He naturally likes to move around and never stays in one place for long, and lacks perseverance and is highly changeable. The w indicates someone who completely lives for the present, someone timid and easily frightened. It is someone who loves peace and likes freedom from responsibility and life’s challenges. It indicates a person who learns several occupations and toys with several more. He uses soft-spoken persuasion, returning a smile for a smile. He arrives at a time different from the expected and carries something not necessarily required. He represents real estate agents working for you. He is interested in domestic affairs, children, and the common people. He loves whatever is changing and fluctuating in nature, such as fads and fashions, new ideas, changing prices, vital statistics, the weather, and anything that is brewing, developing and shaping up.
When badly placed the w describes the person as a drifter and lazy person who dislikes to work, and prefers to drink and live on the street, content with having no income or home. He is material in nature, easily imposed upon and willing to work for nothing. He takes a subordinate position in an important place and accomplishes a diversity of functions quite dutifully, usually developing them for others. He is meek, willing to defer to the opinions of others. He is emotional and one who engineers many changes. He yearns to be carefree and will eventually be relieved of an obligation he undertook but prefers to evade.
In appearance he is of medium height, fluctuating in weight, light in colouring, placid and gentle. He has a round or w face and a lot of hair on his head and body. The eyes tend to be uneven in height or size, and very deeply set. The hands are short and fleshy, and the whole body is inclined to be plump, though not always so, depending on the rising sign. It is not a pretty or lovely body, but simply average. This is a very ordinary and average person, with no outstanding features or marks. If there are hard aspect between the Q and w in natal or horary charts, then the person often has a blemish in or near the eyes if the w is succeedent, or there is a problem with vision. If the w is unfortunate in angular houses or conjunct malefic fixed stars, then there are problems with vision. The w rules the colours white or silver. In weather forecasting, it is cold and the wettest of all the planets. With W it brings cold air and grey clouds, with V fair skies, with U red clouds, and with the Q according to the season. With S and T it brings winds and rain.
Occupation or Position: The w rules all manner of women with titles. The w also rules the common people or public, sailors, fishermen, fish merchants, breweries, bakeries, waiters, milkmen, chicken farmers, dairy farmers, makers of malt, drunkards, caretakers, fast food street vendors, and generally anyone who sells commodities on the streets. It also rules midwives, stewards, deliverymen and laundries.
The w rules places of residence such as the home, hotel, apartment, houseboat or trailer. It also rules stopover sites, parking places, lodges and restrooms, nests and the womb. The w rules all docking places, seaports, beaches, docks, wharves and piers, boathouses, and all kinds of boats and ships. When the w is in a house having to do with a matter of real estate, it probably provides shelter, and if in water signs it may be near or on the water. If the w rules or is in the 1st house, then the querent owns or is interested in owning nearby property.
THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE Q
The Q rules the Fire sign g and is in detriment in K. It is exalted in A and is in its fall in z. It rules the Fire Element by day and it is hot and dry, but not quite as hot as U. It is a masculine, diurnal planet that is quite fortunate when well aspected by the Benefics. In weather, the Q is hot and dry, depending on the season and the sign and aspect.
Manners: When well dignified the Q indicates someone who is loyal and faithful, who keeps his promises and is reliable and punctual. He has a desire to rule, manage or lead and wants to persuade others to his point of view when he arrives on the scene. He is prudent and has excellent judgement, and has a commanding air and stateliness about him. He is ambitious to acquire honour, status and wealth, yet he is willing to part with these trappings at a moment’s notice. He is serious and deliberate when he speaks and is not a man of many words. He has great self-confidence and a commanding presence. He is thoughtful and discreet and able to keep secrets and is very trustworthy. Despite his status, he is generous and easygoing and treats everyone with courtesy and respect. He loves conspicuous displays of wealth and power, and he thrives on admiration and respect. He will delegate work to others and accept favours. He is respected and accorded consideration in the quesited and is in a position to gain more or less. He loves sports and is devoted to his family and children.
When badly placed he is proud and arrogant, disdaining all other men and he brags of his ancestry. He is short sighted and lacking good judgement, and he is restless, troublesome and domineering. He is full of himself, shows off with expensive goods, and lacks any seriousness in words or soberness of action. He is a spendthrift who wastes his inheritance, and depends on other people’s charity. Yet he thinks all other men respect him, because he was born into wealth and position. He commands a higher place than he may be fitted for and is somewhat insecure and uneasy in his mind. He is self indulgent and extravagant and likely to speculate or gamble recklessly. He allows someone else to pay for his debts, nor does he exert himself to collect what is owed to him. Besides the Q, much of the foregoing is applicable to any planetary significator that is in the sign of g. The Q in angular houses indicates someone born to the position, in succeedent houses he may have inherited it in due course, and in cadent houses he may have had his position thrust upon him through fortuitous and favourable circumstances. He is needy for praise, fame and respect from others. Outwardly he acts with great decorum and is extremely well mannered, but privately he is looking for sex and is inclined to other vices.
In appearance he is medium tall, well muscled and strong, has a pale or ruddy complexion, and a round large forehead. His eyes are protruding, sharp and piercing. The body is strong and well proportioned, not so much handsome as good looking, and he is warm and very energetic. The hair tends to be light or blond with curls, and the men tend toward baldness. The men also have heavy beards and are inclined to be overweight with a tendency to potbellies. He is slow of speech and deliberate in his judgment.
Occupation or Position: The Q rules kings, princes, emperors, dukes and marquis and any male member of the nobility. In modern times, the Q also rules presidents, prime ministers, and other political figures. It also rules magistrates, gentlemen in general, lobbyists, ambitious men striving for titles and advancement, justices of the peace, mayors and chiefs of police. In short, any one in power, including the officers of a company such as president and CEO. The Q also rules any police or military officer, no matter how small his command. The Q also rules any metal worker, gold smith, jeweller, workers in brass, copper or pewter, or minters of money.
The Q rules large and showy places, mansions and palatial structures, great halls, theatres and pleasure resorts, gambling and sports clubs, showboats, towers and minarets, impressive mansions and castles set on high cliffs. Whatever is constructed magnificently and gives pride of ownership and pleasure, and is easy to see far off. If the Q is in a house having to do with the question about real estate or personal property, say that it is large, showy and more or less costly for the querent to build, buy or maintain. The Q increases the value of whatever is represented by the house it rules or is in and increases its assets. These assets are derived from the preceding house whose property it is.
THE SIGNIFICANCE OF S
S rules the Air sign C and the Earth sign F and is in detriment in I and L. It is in its exaltation in K and in its fall in g, and it rules the Air Element by night. S is neither masculine nor feminine but is androgynous, having qualities of both genders. S is masculine when aspecting masculine planets, and feminine when aspecting feminine planets. Its nature is cold, dry, and windy, and when aspecting Benefics, then it is good, when aspecting Malefics, then it is bad. In angular houses in seasonal Ingress Charts or Lunar Phase charts S brings a season or week of cold and windy weather.
Manners: When well dignified, it represents a person with a subtle mind and political understanding, a good intellect, and the ability to think on his feet. He is an articulate and excellent debater and well versed in logic, and his arguments are articulate and well informed. He is eloquent in speech and likes to delve into all kinds of mysteries and knowledge. His tongue is sharp and witty, and he can learn almost anything without the help of a teacher. He is ambitious to be an expert in many different fields of knowledge, enjoys travelling and seeing many foreign countries. He is a person of insatiable curiosity in search of occult knowledge. He is capable of producing fantastic results through his innate talents, and he likes to make predictions and studies occult knowledge. If he becomes a merchant (from mercury) no one can outperform him in making good deals or inventing new ways of making money. S describes the person as clever and skilful, able to adapt or adopt, susceptible to change and correction. He is inquisitive and interested in details, carrying papers, books or tickets. He is restless and impatient regarding the quesited, dual in nature and well able to represent someone else as an agent or go between. He minds someone else’s business as well as his own. He is personal about business issues, and businesslike about personal issues. He is very quick in making decisions. He is fluent in speech and quick-witted in answering, but may contradict himself and others with equal ease. He airily shrugs off his mistakes, and repeats himself and adopts other people’s mannerisms. He is a busy and chatty little fellow, and walks very nimbly and purposefully as if he had a great project ahead of him.
Badly placed: He has a troublesome wit, a frenetic and frantic man, his tongue and his pen seek dispute with everyone and he challenges everything. He is intent in wasting his money and time in talking endlessly and coming to conclusion that have no particular purpose. He is a great liar, boaster, talker, gossip, spreader of rumours and slander, and given to studying all kinds of criminal skills. He believes every foolish fad or theory that comes his way, a complete idiot who has no firm and constant opinion. He is a thief amongst thieves, cheating and betraying everyone that he meets. He likes novelty, pretending to be an expert in all kinds of fields, but having no true knowledge and understanding. He is a trifler and dilettante, merely talking and skimming along the surface of knowledge. He easily changes his mind, and his only consistent quality is his constant bragging and idle chatter. His decisions make for much unhappiness, usually regarding marriage and employment. Affairs in general go wrong or are unsatisfactory because they are based on hasty decisions causing loss or discredit and some disappointment. A sibling or relative acts in his behalf at a difficult period involving a legal document.
Appearance In appearance he is very short to medium in height, slender and very youthful looking. He is alert and nervous in manner, and inclined to interrupt, grimace or gesticulate. He has a straight and thin body, a high forehead, and a somewhat narrow face and straight pointed nose. He has thin lips, little hair on his face but a lot on his head. The hair is generally fine and dark brown inclined to black. He has long arms, hands and fingers, slender legs and his complexion is likely olive or darker.
Occupation or Position: S generally indicates literary men or intellectuals, merchants, secretaries, clerks, orators, principals of schools, printers, office supply merchants, ambassadors, commissioners, craftsmen, accountants, actuaries, advisors, agents, authors, canvassers solicitors, messengers, columnists, computer programmers, dieticians.
If S goes retrograde or changes signs before the w’s last applying Ptolemaic aspect in any horary chart, then it signifies a change of plan or of mind. If it rules the possession in a chart concerning lost possessions, then it generally indicates the return of that possession. Or it may involve a change of price in charts involving money, and a change of treatment in illness charts. The nature of the aspect to the ascendant or its ruler tells whether the change is for the querent’s best interest.
S rules places of business, transportation, learning and of all forms of communication, service and agent such as messengers. It rules whatever carries a ticket, receipt, or message, whether it is written or oral. S rules places where people come together for active participation, usually in public as in assemblies or for games, but seldom violent. S rules offices, pulpits, newspapers and publishing houses and legal documents. It rules railway stations, airports, and all points of departure and return. S rules convention halls, seating areas of churches or theatres, the grandstand for public exhibitions, and the post office. If S is the significator there will be a paper or document or ticket of some sort in the quesited, and much coming and going. S also rules brief cases, satchels and luggage of all kinds, especially when considered as a place where a missing document may be stored. S is partial to any equipment having compartments and pigeonholes or shelves for stowing things away and forgetting them. S also rules hands and arms and computers.
THE SIGNIFICANCE OF T
T is a feminine planet, moderately cool and moist, nocturnal, the Lesser Benefic. T rules fun and games, parties, sex and celebrations. T rules the Earth sign B and the Air sign z, and is in its exaltation in L. It is in detriment in A and H and in its fall in F, and rules the Earth Element by day. It rules anything shiny or glittering things such as jewellery.
Manners: Well dignified, T describes the person as quiet, not given to insisting on observance of the letter of the law. He is a peaceful person, not given to quarrelling, wrangling, or corruption. He is pleasant, neat and tidy, and he loves to fill his words with fun and humour. His clothing is clean and well pressed, and he may drink and eat too much. He pursues sexual relations with great energy and vigour, and is often tied in knots by problems in his romantic relationships. He is zealous in his affections, loves music, swimming and all normal types of fun and pleasure. He enjoys acting, the theatre, and the arts in general. He is often naïve and ingenuous, and does not like to work too hard or put himself out. He is a very social creature, cheerful and trusting, a fair and ethical person, though often jealous of other people. He is obliging, co-operative, peace loving, and obedient. He wants harmony, security, pleasure, the company of others, romance and marriage. He is a soft-spoken person with engaging manners and sweet disposition, poise and a placid nature. He is contented of spirit, and full of kind intentions. He is simple, ingenuous and innocent of ulterior motives. He is easily coaxed to settle any disputes peaceably.
Badly placed, he pursues wild parties and all extremes of pleasure. He is a spendthrift given to promiscuity, drunkenness and the companionship of prostitutes and easy women. He has no pride in his own reputation, and pursues adulterous or perverted sexual affairs, and he is fanatical in his pursuit of pleasure. No one has faith in him nor trusts him, because he’s unreliable and shiftless. He wastes his money on nightclubs, bars and entertainment and hangs out with a crowd of no-good drunks and worthless people. He caters to his basic instincts and does not care for anything in life except his own immediate pleasure, and is not inclined to be religious.
In appearance the person is of small to medium height, very handsome or pretty with a light or white complexion and rosy cheeks. He usually has very large and lovely eyes, sometimes protruding but lovely and graceful. He has lovely red lips of a deep cherry colour, the lower one often bigger than the upper one. He has a wickedly flirtatious eye and has an attractively curved body in women. The face is soft and rounded but not fat, and he usually has blond or light brown hair and a lot of it. The body is handsome or lovely, and both genders like to primp and spend enormous amounts of time on their makeup and appearance. He has a lovely dimple in his cheeks and a flirtatious and inviting manner. He is very pleasing in face and form, with beauty either natural or artificial. While there may be an effort to reduce weight, there is no refusal to accept candy any time.
Occupation or Position: T rules musicians, merchants of textiles, cloth or clothing, drapery sellers, painters, jewellers, actors, sellers of gems, embroiderers, tailors, seamstresses, wives, mothers, virgins, singers, painters, engravers, illustrators, cosmeticians, sellers of perfumes.
T rules places catering to ease and entertainment such as social centres, ballrooms, restaurant, outdoor cafe, public gardens, salons, bedrooms and dressing rooms, and shops where fine commodities are sold over the counter or where barbering or beauty treatments are available. The effect of T is to beautify the exterior and to purify the interior. It protects the finish, polishes the surface, and increases value. It develops charm, refinement and elegance of whatever is quesited when it is the significator. T brings gains. If T rules or is in the house governing the quesited, say that its allure increases its value, and that such allure is mainly based on the care and attention it receives. If the purchase of an article of clothing or a piece of property is considered, it is something that must be well looked after in order to retain its charm, value and apparent well being.
THE SIGNIFICANCE OF U
U rules the Fire sign A by day and the Water sign H by night, and it is triplicity ruler of the water element by day and night. U is in its detriment in B and z, and it is exalted in v and in its fall in D. It is a masculine, nocturnal planet, in nature hot and dry. It is the author and instigator of all quarrels, strife and discontent. It is the Lesser Malefic, and will cause damage or injury in the sign and house where it is placed.
Manner: When well dignified, it indicates a martial or military person, someone capable of great feats of courage and daring in battle, determined that no one will outdo him. He is bold, confident and unwavering, but also contentious and wanting all the glory for himself. He is valiant, a lover of war and all things military. He willingly exposes himself to danger, but is unwilling to obey anyone else’s orders. He will not submit to anyone, and likes to brag endlessly about his exploits. He will fight all of his enemies in search of victory, yet he is quite prudent in his own affairs. U describes the person as positive, self-reliant, courageous, outspoken and independent in action. He is quick to make the first move, alert, dynamic and immediate. He arrives ready and armed with whatever strategy or weapon the occasion requires and it is sharp and cutting. He always knows what to cut out and is equipped to do it. He is argumentative in the matter and quick to kill the deal if he finds himself on losing ground. The better placed by sign, the greater his enterprising value in whatever he tackles, initiates or explores or debates.
Badly placed: He is a braggart without modesty or honesty, a lover of slaughter and quarrels. He hangs out with murderers and thieves, and is a promoter of treason and brawls. He is a robber, thief, and wavering in his loyalties. He is a traitor with a troubled spirit, a perjurer and perpetrator of obscenities. He is rash and unreasonable, neither fearing god nor caring much for men. He is an ungrateful, treacherous bully, a cheater who takes out his anger through violence against other men. If U is in B or z, a sign ruled by T, then he will fornicate, and in a sign ruled by S he steals. But in his own signs of A or H he quarrels incessantly. In the W ruled signs of v and K he is doggedly persevering, in g he is lordly, and in D a drunkard. He is bold and proud, given to mock, scorn, quarrel, drink, game and fornicate.
Appearance: He is of medium height, with a sturdy and muscular body and heavy bones, yet in his movements he gives the impression of fencing and parrying with agility. He has a strong body, tending more toward lean rather than fat. The complexion is somewhat darker than average, or very red as if sunburned. He has a round and ruddy face and his hair is red or blond, and often somewhat curly. The eyes are a blue or hazel colour with a sharp piercing or sparkling gaze. He has a bold and confident appearance, and he is very active and fearless. He is intent on the matter at hand and usually looks angry and speaks sharply. There is a wound in evidence, and he carries a grudge or never forgives old injuries, real or fancied.
Occupation or Position: U rules conquerors and generals of armies, or any army officer. U rules pharmacists, surgeons, chemists, gunners, butchers, marshals, thieves, gymnasts, smiths, bakers, armourers, tailors, sword makers, barbers, cooks, carpenters, dentists, firemen, policemen
U rules places of action such as forges, boxing and wrestling rings and hockey arenas. U also rules slaughterhouses, operating rooms, kilns and machine shops, burned ground or devastated areas and crematoriums. If U rules the 1st house, then this indicates that the querent has suffered an injury or violence regarding the quesited, in a place where force was evident or a collision. If U is in the house ruling the quesited it indicates trouble and is near a place where action occurs.
THE SIGNIFICANCE OF V
V rules the Fire sign I by day and the Water sign L by night, and is in detriment in C and F. V is exalted in D and in its fall in v, and rules the Fire Element by night. V is a masculine diurnal planet, moderately hot and moist, airy, the Greater Benefic, the author or originator of moderation and temperance, modesty, sobriety and justice.
Manners when well dignified: He is generous and high minded, faithful, aspiring in an honourable way to a high position, in all his action a lover of fair deals and practises. He wants to help everyone, do glorious things, and he is honourable and religious, or at least very ethical. He loves pleasant conversation, and is well spoken or well educated. He is wonderfully indulgent to his spouse and children, and respects the older generation. He is descended from a well-off family, or at least seems better than his peers. He is charitable to the poor, liberal, and hates all sorts of sordid activities. He is just, wise, prudent, grateful, and virtuous. V describes the person as optimistic, generous and forgiving. He is charitable, interested in education and intellectual matters, and may be involved in publishing or spiritual affairs. He has respect for the law and the church, his superiors and elders. He arrives ready to co-operate and defer, to settle the matter honourably and out of court if possible. He will give full compensation for losses on the other side and he wants justice and peace. He is philosophical about the outcome. He is placid, unconcerned about threats, more than willing to meet other people half way. He is inclined to point out the moral to be learned, is jovial in speech and hearty in laughter, and makes himself a favourite.
When badly placed: He wastes his inherited wealth, and allows everyone to cater and suck up to him. He is hypocritically religious, tenacious, and stubborn in maintaining his own tenets or views. He is ignorant and careless, and does not care about the affection of his friends. He is dull of mind and gross in habits, likes to cause divisive arguments, and lowers himself in the eyes or company of others even when there is no need to do so.
In appearance he is upright and straight in bearing, and strongly built, often tending to fat or overweight. He has blond or light brown hair, which is quite often curly. He has a ready smile and a confident _expression. He is given to sitting comfortably and folding his hands. He has a lovely complexion, and a full and fleshy face. He has a high forehead, large eyes, with a large gap between his eyebrows, and between brows and eyes. Sometimes the brows are quite heavy or bushy. His hair is soft and a kind of auburn brown. His teeth are broad and strong, but often there are flaws in the two front teeth. He has a large belly and strong and well-proportioned thighs and legs. His feet are disproportionately long, being the most awkward part of his whole body. If V is combust the Q, the hair may be thin and lanky.
Occupation or Position: V rules judges, juries, councillors, ministers of the church or preachers, bishops, cardinals, chancellors and ministers, lawyers, scholars, clothiers, advertising agents, aldermen, aristocracy, barristers, counsellors, jockeys, professors, pilgrims, publishers.
V as significator indicates one whose life was comfortable, no matter how simple. He grew up in a religious environment and is well educated, as well as being schooled in etiquette and polite conversation. He was adequately provided for, entertained and taken on family travels. He is not ambitious or interested in material things, or given to saving for a rainy day. He is quick to give away whatever he has that may be needed or coveted by others. V is known as the Greater Benefic, conferring increased happiness and protection from or cure for illnesses. He loves titles and acclaim, likes to have relief from pressure, and enjoys full compensation for his efforts. He is particularly rewarding to those who give to charity, so that the giver is always amazingly enriched in his turn and thus rewarded for his generosity.
V rules places of dignity and solemnity, such as command respect, churches, altars and confessionals, law courts, military tribunals, banks and large institutions such as universities and great libraries and great cathedrals. The effect of V is to enlarge and embellish so that the quesited will be impressive, to a greater or lesser degree. If V rules or is in the house of the question, then there is dignity and honour involved, and some deeper meaning. If it is a person, an article or real estate, then it is worthy of respect because of an inherent superiority or its high and honourable position.
THE SIGNIFICANCE OF W
W rules the Earth Sign v by night and the Air Sign K by day, where it is in its joy. It is exalted in z, and it is in its fall in A, and it is in its detriment in D and g. It rules the Air Element by day. It is a diurnal planet, cold and dry, earthy, masculine, the Greater Malefic, and the author or cause of solitude and loneliness.
Manners when well dignified: He is profound in imagination, severe in action and harsh in words, of which there are but few. He works patiently, and when arguing or disputing he is calm and serious. He studies hard to learn how to obtain wealth, and in all manner of action he is austere. W describes the person as serious, industrious, practical and conservative. He is disciplined patient, thrifty, and cautious, conscientious and usually suspicious. He makes an appearance silently and without warning and usually in secret. Concerning the quesited, it may be difficult to dislodge him, to loosen his grip or hasten his pace. He is crafty and clever for his own ends and profit, persuading people to his viewpoint.
Badly placed: He is envious, jealous, greedy, and mistrustful, while at the same time he is cowardly, vile, hiding his true feelings and intentions. He is sluggish, suspicious, stubborn, a misogynist and hater of women. He is a liar, malicious, never content and always complaining. He may be the most level-headed person present, yet be an undeniable problem by taking over the management without authority and needling others. He can be full of revenge and malice, caring little for religion or god. He is a foul, nasty slovenly fellow, or a whore if a woman. He can be a great eater with a huge potbelly, a brawler and fighter with strong broad shoulders. He is greedy for wealth yet seldom achieves it.
Appearance: He is lean and thin, medium to tall in height, and his skin and complexion is pale, his eyes small and dark and looking downward. His fingernails are in poor condition, and his eyes can be grey or hazel in colour. He has a broad forehead, black, lacklustre and thin hair, and it is generally stiff and scruffy. He has big ears, lowering bushy eyebrows, thick lips or nose, and a patchy or thin beard. His face is lumpy and unpleasant, and he probably has rough and acne scarred skin. He holds his head forward or stooping, and has broad and stooping shoulders. He looks down to the ground and is slow in motion. He has a lean belly and short abdomen and his thighs are thin and lean. His knees and feet are unusually large, many times he is knock-kneed and his knees bump against each other. He gives the effect of great watchfulness and appraisal under overhanging eyebrows, and seems consciously determined. He often has dental trouble at the time of the question and perhaps a cold. He may suffer from a chronic disability, and if the ascendant is under hard aspect from U or if W is retrograde, then he has sustained an injury.
Occupation or Position: W rules farmers, clowns, beggars, labourers, old men, grand fathers, monks, chiropractors, engineers, bricklayers, palaeontologists, plumbers, politician, miners, slaves, taxidermists, widows, yeomen.
W rules places of labour, usually hard to reach, unpleasant to find or to smell, such as cow barns, pig sties, chicken houses, dunghills, garbage dumps. W also rules coal pits and dark caverns and lairs, dungeons, mortuaries, and graves. W rules all places of sadness, melancholy, solitude and desertion such as ruins, lonely haunts, cellars, dens and prisons, dark recesses, cemeteries, caves and stone quarries, gravel pits, ghost towns. It rules all places of caged or barred detention, fences walls and barriers. If W rules or is in the house governing the quesited, then it has a lonely air about it and may have remained unused over a long period of time or it is near a dark and gloomy and perhaps abandoned location. It may be weighed down or buried by heavy overgrowth. If W is retrograde then it describes something old and well used, in a poor condition, or it may be unwholesome and unhealthy. Where you find a retrograde planet you always find a condition and situation that is unwholesome or unhealthy, especially if the planet is malefic W.
THE SIGNIFICANCE OF X
X rules the Air sign K in questions regarding groups, organizations or countries. It is cold, dry and electric, changeable, rebellious, perverse and detached. In questions regarding personal issues, look at W, the classical ruler of K first, and X second.
Manners: X describes the person as original in outlook and unpredictable in action, abrupt and nonconformist. He has a genius for finding a quick way out regarding the quesited by cutting through red tape and doing the unexpected. He is inventive and spontaneous, and gains perspective by looking at the big picture and larger issues. He takes on heroic ventures involving rearrangement due to circumstances beyond his control. He arrives ready to alter, reform and improve matters. He appears carefree but is carrying a burden having to do with his position in life. He is physically disabled in some way that he has overcome to some extent. He is sure to attract attention because of his difference in demeanour, his unusual outlook, and his lack of formality. He is authoritative and ready to solve all problems, but has been estranged from his relatives. He has lost a parent or has lately broken a relationship or given up a membership. X indicates someone whose life involves great adjustments to circumstances not of his choosing but nevertheless readily accepted. Where you find K you find the truth about the matter in question.
Badly placed: he is unpredictable and unreliable, living in his own little world and marching to the beat of his own drummer. He has experienced violence and the loss of his personal freedom.
In appearance he is of medium height, light hair and a high forehead. The eyes are an intense electric blue or black, or they have a really wishy-washy dreamy appearance. His eyes always have an unusual _expression, and he has a habit of wagging his head to emphasise his remarks.
X rules places of scientific or technological activity that may be devoted to electronics, development of inventions and modern improvements of older methods. He works with electricity, explosives, high frequency sound and rays and the transmission of sound and sight, as in radio and television, and with fissionable materials and whatever is capable of spontaneous or induced disintegration. The effect of X is to break down and rearrange, the intention being to improve whatever is asked about and to serve science and society. It can also be completely self-serving. The querent is due to have his plan altered because where you find X the house is built on shifting sands and the querent’s tenancy is limited, his plan changes. X indicates an unexpected and unusual or out of character departure from the normal, everyday procedure if rules or is in the house ruling the quesited. If X represents a person, he is unpredictable, operating like lightning, and if it is a thing, then it has some connection with electricity or is a cause of frustration. If it is a property, the neighbourhood is near high voltage wires and may be in a new housing development.
THE SIGNIFICANCE OF Y
Y rules the Water sign L in questions regarding groups, organizations or countries. It is cool, foggy and moist and rules psychic phenomena and intuition, as well as delusion, illusion and images. Y also rules drugs, poisons and smog. In questions regarding personal issues, look at V the classical ruler of L first, and Y second.
Manner: Y describes the person as idealistic and somewhat unrealistic, highly imaginative and inspirational with a tendency to act erratically or on hunches. He is easily persuaded to turn with the tide and accept what others deem expedient. He is visionary and unscientific but highly intuitive and generally possessed of extraordinary perception as the matter unfolds. He arrives either uninformed or misinformed and is vague in that he cannot be brought down to earth instead of accepting illusion. He makes an unreliable witness in the case, and is forgetful and procrastinating and given to hedging. He is interested in images, photography and the fine arts. He digresses in conversation toward the psychic or occult interpretation, or else suspects some hidden meaning.
In appearance, he is attractive, calm, quiet and gentle in manner, vague in colouring, with a dreamy and withdrawn look in his eyes. With Y in the 1st or aspecting the ascendant he may have a button nose. He may have wrinkles and have an oddity in the way he walks.
Y rules places of retirement, confinement, seclusion and enforced solitude, such as penitentiaries, jails, police stations, hospitals and asylums, senior citizens homes, cells and barred places. There is something mysterious and hard to explain in horary questions where Y is the significator, whose influence tends to fool or defraud so that the querent is misinformed or uninformed about the quesited. Concerning lost possessions it indicates forgetfulness and the likelihood of mislaying. It assumes some value that is not really there and leads the judgement astray. Any real estate will seem much more attractive than it really is. If Y rules or is in the house of the quesited, then the querent must be on his guard. Appearances are deceptive and the matter is not entirely as represented. The place is not altogether as it seems, nor is the thing genuine, and there is a question or dispute regarding the title.
THE SIGNIFICANCE OF Z
Z rules the Water sign H in questions regarding groups, organizations or countries. In questions regarding personal issues, look at U the classical ruler of H first, and Z second.
Z rules large sums of money, big business, big banks, dictatorial governments, and places of death such as mortuaries and concentration camps. Like U, it tends to damage or complicate the matter of the house where it is placed unless very well dignified and aspected. It rules wars and destruction.
Manners: He is extremely controlling, clinging to his relationships with such force that he chokes the life out of them, leaving friends and partners no choice but to leave. Since Z rules the sex organs, it can indicate sexual or physical abuse when conjunct the ascendant.
Appearance: The eyes are very deep set, with a narrow bridge to the nose, making them appear close together. The person has a brooding or angry look about them.
The North < and South > Nodes of the w
The < is masculine, of the nature of V and T, and is considered a Benefic, or at least neutral. The > is feminine by nature, and exactly opposite to the <, and is considered a Malefic, of the nature of U or W. The aspects of the < to either of the Malefics lessens their bad influence, and when aspecting Benefics it increases their good influence. When the > aspects Malefics, then the bad influence or result is tripled, and when aspecting Benefics it causes problems and unexpected interference, and a lot of dispute and controversy. Many times the matter at hand is given up as a lost cause before a successful conclusion can be reached. Unless the main significators are angular and well dignified and aspected, the matter at hand comes to nothing. Any planet or angle in the same degree as the < points to a catastrophe, casualty, fatality or tragedy in a horary or natal chart, even if this is an easy aspect such as a sextile or trine. It is even more far reaching when the aspect applies to a Malefic. If the aspect is applying, then the problem is about to occur, and when it is separating then the trouble has already occurred. If the planet aspecting the < rules the querent, then the problem will occur for him. However, if the aspecting planet rules the 7th, indicating an enemy or competitor, then the problem will happen for the other person, and will be good for the querent.
The Colours of the Planets
W is black or lead grey, or ashen, or jet-black. V is a clear deep blue or turquoise like the sky. U is bright red, like rusted iron. The Q is gold, yellow or scarlet, and some maybe even purple. S is a dusky silver or bluish, and T is bright white or purple in colour. The w is white or pale yellow white, or pale green, or silver spotted with other colours.
Planetary Hours
Each day of the week is ruled and named for a planet and the planet that rules the day also rules the 1st hour after sunrise. Since the local time of sunrise depends mostly on latitude, two cities at the same longitude but different latitudes can have different planetary hours even if the charts are drawn up for the exact same moment of time.
SUNDAY - is ruled by Q from the 1st hour after sunrise
MONDAY - is ruled by w from the 1st hour after sunrise
TUESDAY - is ruled by U from the 1st hour after sunrise
WEDNESDAY - is ruled by S from the 1st hour after sunrise
THURSDAY - is ruled by V from the 1st hour after sunrise
FRIDAY - is ruled by T from the 1st hour after sunrise
SATURDAY- is ruled by W from the 1st hour after sunrise
The PLANETARY HOUR sequence on Sunday is: Q T S w W V U
The sequence then starts over again, so that by early afternoon, the ruler of the day rules the hour again. Since the sequence starts with sunrise, it also continues until sunrise the next morning. The planetary rulers of the hour repeat at least three times per day, since there are only seven classical planets. So for a Friday, the ruler of the day is T, which remains the ruler of the day until sunrise Saturday morning. The sequence of the planetary hours is Chaldean in origin.
The Part of Fortune ?
Ptolemy considered the ? equivalent to a planet, with the difference that it can only receive planetary aspects, not make them, since it is not a planet and has no energy. The Part of Fortune is a midpoint, calculated according to the Formula Ascendant + w – Q. Ptolemy and modern horary astrologers reverse the formula for night charts, when the Q is below the horizon. When it is in a good sign and a good house and in good aspect with a Benefic, then we can see that the fortune or wealth of the querent is indicated by the strength of the ?. However, in a sign where it has no standing it is considered to be the Part of Misfortune.
The ? rules or is very strong in B or I, rating +5, and works well in D, g z n, rating +4.
It works reasonably well in C, rating +3, and not too bad in F, rating +2 if it is in the terms of T or V . In conjunction with T or V, it really works well and gets a rating of +5. In trine with T or V it rates a +4, in sextile with T or V it rates +2, and in conjunction with < it rates +3.
The ? is strong in the 1st and 10th, rating +5, and fairly strong in the 7th, 4th, and 11th rating +4. It rates a +3 in the 2nd or 5th, and it’s OK in the 9th for +2, and so-so in the 3rd for +1.
The ? in conjunction with Regulus rates +6, with Spica +5, and if not combust or under the sunbeams gets a +5. The ? is in detriment or works very poorly in v, H, and K, rating a –5, and poorly in A, rating a zero. The ? rates a –5 in hard aspect to U or W, and a –3 if conjunct the >. It rates a –5 in the 12th house, a –4 in the 8th and 6th, a –4 with Caput Algol, and a –5 combust the Q. The ? is a point representing the querent’s financial and material resources and if it is in a sign in which T or V are dignified or exalted, then the person will possess a fortune according to his sense of values. The ? shows by the house that it is in where matters will improve and if it is well aspected by the w then such matters are now being developed favourably.
Statistically, the ? is strongest in v,K,B and the 3rd and 5th house. Neither Lilly nor I have a very high opinion of the ? and the other Arabic Parts, and I generally ignore them.None of Lilly’s examples depend on an Arabic part for a solution.
ANTISCIONS
Antiscions or solstice points as they are also known are points that are equidistant from the two points where the Q stands still, or reaches its Solstice. These points are 0^D00’ and
0^v00’. When a planet is at 1^ g it is the same distance from the solstice point of 0^D00’ as it would be at 29^ B

Antiscions from good planets are the equal of a sextile or trine, while the contra-antiscia are of the nature of a square or opposition. The contra-antiscion is always in the same degree and minute opposite the antiscion. When in doubt, use a computer. It should be noted here that neither the Arabic Parts nor the antiscia play any definitive part in solving any of the examples in this book.
Longitude: Measurement of planetary position by sign relative to the vernal equinox point or zero degrees A. Longitude is measured perpendicular to the ecliptic.
Latitude: Measurement of planetary position North or South of the ecliptic, used in some astrological measurements. Latitude is measured parallel to the ecliptic.
Declinations: Measurement of planetary position parallel to the Earth’s equator, but declinations are irrelevant to the practise of astrology. Declinations and Right Ascensions are used to aim telescopes. All astrological action happens on the ecliptic because that is where the energy of the Solar System is. W’s rings are an easily visible examples of a planetary ecliptic.
