Old Posts Dreams - Jungian Anaylsis - Man and his Symbols
Man and his Symbols

Carl Gustav Jung was born in 1875 in Switzerland. He initially began a career in archaeology before studying medicine and finally settling on psychiatry. Jung met Freud in Vienna and the two worked closely together on psychoanalysis. However after a few years Jung began to develop his own theories that differed from those of Freud in a number of important ways.
Whereas Freud was a reductionist - breaking things down into their constituent elements - Jung was more of a connectivist - joining elements together to produce a larger picture. Jungian dream analysis involves more synthesis.

Like Freud, Jung divided the human psyche into three parts, however his categories differed. For Jung the human mind consisted of the ego, the personal unconscious and the collective unconscious.

The Collective Unconscious & Jungian Archetypes
It is the latter, collective unconscious that has been most controversial. There are clear mystic and "unscientific" connotations to the term. Does the collective unconscious "exist" or is it simply a convenient label for those mental linkages we all share by dint of similar physiology and being brought up in broadly similar fashion? At the end of the day it doesn't really matter.
A central element of Jung's psychoanalytic work was the idea of the "archetype". This was a fundamental, powerful symbol that we all share through the collective unconscious. One example is the "mother" archetype. We all share this, yet how we experience it depends on our personal psychology - good mother, earth mother, motherland, etc. Other archetypes include hero, trickster and - most important of all - self.

Jung was especially interested in studying the archetypes related to mythology and old religions. For example, the Dragon (or serpent) was an archetype representing the unconsious mind that had to be slain by the Hero.

Jungian Dream Interpretation
Like Freud, Jung believed that dreams are important gateways to unknown parts of ourself. Dreams are an expression of the personal unconscious through the archetypes of the collective unconscious.
Whereas Freud believed that dreams were frequently distorted in a subconscious attempt at repression, Jung believed that any such distortion was usually unintentional. The dream was a direct message from the personal unconscious.

Freudian analysis was based on free association, a technique that led ever further from the original dream. Jung preferred to stay with the dream symbols themselves and analyse each one in detail - a process of amplification. The dreamer was encouraged to "brainstorm" all the different symbolic associations for each aspect of the dream. These would include personal, cultural and archetypal associations.

As an example, say a dream included birds. Possible associations with this symbol would be flight, freedom, cage, etc.

Another stage of Jungian dream analysis is "active imagination". Here, the dreamer mentally evokes a character from the dream and asks it questions. Through this approach the unconscious can be questioned directly.

The various symbolic associations would then be examined and the most important ones combined to give a holistic view of the dream's meaning.

Old Posts Dreams- General
Q) What does it mean when I have a recurring dream?

A) This type of dream usually means that the mind has not completely finished venting of the emotions and thoughts surrounding it. Once it is interpreted correctly by a qualified therapist, then the dream should not return.

Q) I Don’t Dream -- Is something wrong with me?

A) We all dream. Most of us have trouble remembering them though. Hypnosis is very effective in stimulating our dreams and the recall of them.

Q) I always wake up in the middle of the night with horrible dreams. What does that mean?

A) This is usually due to what we call pre-cognitive dreams. The mind attempts to sort out the information previously received in order to predict the future.

Q) How can hypnosis help m with my dreams and how can my dreams help me with my behavior?

A) As stated earlier, hypnosis can stimulate the dream cycle and allow us to vent off the unwanted information so that we can avoid being overloaded. At the same time it can also help us to remember our dreams in order to understand their meaning and become more attuned to our subconscious’ desires, habits and memories.

Q) Is there an easy way to interpret dreams?

A) There is no easy way; however with training it does become more fluid. Please see our dream corner for more information and to have your own dreams interpreted by a certified dream analyst.

Old Posts I Ching
The I Ching ("Book of Changes" or "Classic of Changes") is the oldest of the Chinese classic texts. It describes an ancient system of cosmology and philosophy that is at the heart of Chinese cultural beliefs. The philosophy centers on the ideas of the dynamic balance of opposites, the evolution of events as a process, and acceptance of the inevitability of change (see Philosophy, below). In Western cultures, the I Ching is regarded by some as simply a system of divination; many believe it expresses the wisdom and philosophy of ancient China.

Old Posts Qi-Gong
Qigong (Simplified Chinese: #27668;#21151;; Traditional Chinese: #27683;#21151;; pinyin: qìg#333;ng; Wade-Giles: ch'i4 kung1; Thai: #3594;#3637;#3656;#3585;#3591;) or "Energy-Cultivation", is an aspect of Chinese medicine involving the coordination of different breathing patterns with various physical postures and motions of the body. Qigong is mostly taught for health maintenance purposes, but there are also some who teach it as a therapeutic intervention. Various forms of traditional qigong are also widely taught in conjunction with Chinese martial arts, and are especially prevalent in the advanced training of what are known as the Neijia (Chinese: #20839;#23478;; Pinyin: nèi j#299;a; Wade-Giles: nei4 chia1), or internal martial arts.

There are currently more than 3,300 different styles and schools of qigong.[citation needed] Qigong relies on the traditional Chinese belief that the body has an energy field generated and maintained by the natural respiration of the body, known as qi (this is analagous to Prana and Pranayama in Yoga). Qi means breath or gas in Mandarin Chinese, and, by extension, the energy produced by breathing that keeps us alive; gong means work or technique. Qigong is then "breath work" or the art of managing the breath to achieve and maintain good health, and especially in the martial arts, to enhance the energy mobilization and stamina of the body in coordination with the physical process of respiration.

Attitudes toward the basis of qigong vary markedly. Most Western medical practitioners, many practitioners of traditional Chinese medicine, as well as the Chinese government view qigong as a set of breathing and movement exercises, with possible benefits to health through stress reduction and exercise. Others see qigong in more metaphysical terms, claiming that breathing and movement exercises can influence the fundamental forces of the universe.

Old Posts Tarot - General
While the exact sources of tarot are not completely known, the earliest reliable information suggests tarot originated as a game in 15th century Italy by adding to a normal deck of cards 21 trump cards, a fool, and 4 queens of each suit. Some early tarot decks of north Italian origin, which date to the early to mid-15th century, have remained. These were called carte da trionfi or "cards of the triumphs". Soon afterwards, the cards came to be known as tarocchi.

It is unknown when the tarot was first used for divination. As early as 1540, a book entitled The Oracles of Francesco Marcolino da Forli shows a simple method of divining from the coin suit of a regular playing card deck. Manuscripts from 1735 (The Square of Sevens) and 1750 (Pratesi Cartomancer) show rudimentary divinatory meanings for the cards of the tarot, as well as a system for laying out the cards. In 1765, Giacomo Casanova wrote in his diary that his Russian mistress frequently used a deck of playing cards for divination. In 1781 Antoine Court de Gébelin wrote a speculative history and a detailed system for using the tarot to foretell the future. From Gébelin's time forward, various explanations have been given for the origins of tarot, most of them of doubtful veracity. There is no evidence for any tarot cards prior to the hand-painted ones that were used by Italian nobles, but some esoteric schools believe its origins could be in Ancient Egypt, Ancient India or even the lost continent of Atlantis.

Old Posts Yoga - General
Yoga, meaning union in Sanskrit, is a family of ancient spiritual practices, and also a school of spiritual thought that originated in India, where it remains a vibrant living tradition and is seen as a means to enlightenment. Karma Yoga, Bhakti Yoga, Jnana Yoga, and Raja Yoga are considered the four main yogas, but there are many other types. In other parts of the world where yoga is popular, notably the West, Yoga has become associated with the asanas (postures) of Hatha Yoga, which are popularly considered there as fitness exercises and also form the basis of an expanding business.

Yoga as a means to enlightenment is central to Hinduism, Buddhism, and Jainism, and has influenced other religious and spiritual practices throughout the world. Ancient Hindu texts establishing the basis for yoga include the Upanishads, Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, the Bhagavad Gita, the Hatha Yoga Pradipika and many others, which specify the criteria of having successfully mastered a particular yoga technique.
